Jenna Coleman says ‘Doctor Who’ will be ‘a different show’ with Peter Capaldi

Doctor's companion says new Time Lord will take show in a new direction

Doctor Who actress Jenna Coleman has said that the show will take a new “interesting direction” when Peter Capaldi takes over from Matt Smith as the Time Lord.

Smith is set to make his last appearance as the Doctor in this year’s Christmas special, with The Thick Of It actor Capaldi then set to star in his first series of the programme in 2014.

Speaking on Digital Spy, Coleman – who plays the Doctor’s companion Clara – said that Capaldi’s casting would “take the show in an interesting direction” and added: “He’s going to be so different to Matt [Smith].

“It will be a different show next year. We have a bit of a gap before we start filming the new series, so I have time to get my head around it all. Me and Peter will get together before Christmas to start rehearsing and the scripts will start coming in.”

Smith’s last episode, The Time Of The Doctor, will air on Christmas Day on BBC One at 7.30pm. The BBC have released an official synopsis for the episode which reads:”Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And among them – the Doctor.

“Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.”
