"We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple"
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux have announced their separation, less than three years after the pair initially tied the knot.
In a statement, the Hollywood stars explained that they had split at the end of last year and insisted that they would continue their “cherished friendship”.
They also claimed that speculation from “the gossip industry'” had forced them to directly address their relationship.
“In an effort to reduce any further speculation, we have decided to announce our separation,” the pair said in a joint statement.
“We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple, but look forward to continuing our cherished friendship.
“Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly.”
Friends star Aniston began dating Theroux in May 2011, before the pair became engaged only a year later. They were married at their Los Angeles home in August 2015.
Aniston was previously married to Brad Pitt between 2000 and 2005.
Theroux is well known for his work with comedy star Ben Stiller, having previously appeared in films including Zoolander 2 and The Girl On The Train.
He also made a brief cameo in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
