Joaquin Phoenix and Adam Driver were approached for Lex Luthor role in ‘Batman Vs Superman’

But Jesse Eisenberg landed the part instead

Both Joaquin Phoenix and Adam Driver were approached about the possibility of playing Lex Luthor in the forthcoming Batman Vs Superman film, according to reports.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the two actors were asked about taking on the role of the iconic villain in the sequel to Man Of Steel, but Phoenix rejected the opportunity immediately. Driver, meanwhile – best known for his role as Adam in Lena Dunham’s HBO show Girls – was interested in the part but was forced to pass due to scheduling issues.

As reported last week (February 3), The Social Network actor Jesse Eisenberg has been confirmed to play Luthor instead. In a statement, Warner Bros. spokesperson, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, said: “We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next superhero film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever.”

It was revealed last month that Batman Vs Superman has been delayed by 10 months and will now open on May 6, 2016 to “allow the filmmakers time to realise fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story”. The film was originally slated for a Summer 2015 release.

Ben Affleck will appear in the film as Batman, while Henry Cavill is set to reprise his role as Superman. Amy Adams will be returning as Lois Lane and fellow Man Of Steel cast members Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne have officially signed up to reprise their roles too in the Zack Synder-directed movie.
