John Boyega speaks out against ‘Star Wars’ fan boy trolls for attacking Kelly Marie Tran

The cast strikes back

Star Wars actor John Boyega has spoken out in defence of his co-star Kelly Marie Tran – who deleted her Instagram posts after receiving scores of abusive messages online.

She was the first woman of colour to play a leading role in the franchise – playing mechanic Rose Trico, who befriends and ultimately saves Finn (John Boyega) from dying in The Last Jedi. It was first reported back in December that she had faced racist and sexist comments after her appearance in the film. Now, Boyego has joined the ranks of other co-stars and hit out at those who harassed her.

“If you don’t like Star Wars or the characters understand that there are decisions makers and harassing the actors/ actresses will do nothing,” he wrote on Twitter. “You’re not entitled to politeness when your approach is rude. Even if you paid for a ticket!”

He continued: “To the majority of Star Wars fans thank you for supporting and putting yourselves in our shoes. You understand that there is a process so much appreciated!”

Responding to another Twitter follower calling on him to “stop crying and playing the victim”, Boyega wrote: “Lol yes because I was dying to receive that 100M in my account I hear you though.. we experience the exact same thing and I’ll see the world through your perspective. Just email me you’re reactions to scenarios and I’ll be sure to react just like you! Our issues are identical!

This comes after Stephen Colbert created a new Star Wars trailer to hit back at the trolls who sent abusive messages to Tran.

“They attacked this beautiful, young actress for her ethnicity, her appearance and her sex,” said Colbert, introducing the trailer. “And may I remind you, Kelly Marie Tran is the first lead woman in a Star Wars movie who is not white. So, just to teach these fanboys a lesson, we here at The Late Show have partnered with Lucasfilm to create a new Star Wars movie.”

Last Jedi director Rian Johnson took on one of Tran’s trolls, writing: ” You know the difference between not liking a movie and hatefully harassing a woman so bad she has to get off social media?”
