The Star Wars actor is set to lead the cast in the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's 2013 sci-fi movie
John Boyega has signed on to star in the sequel to Pacific Rim.
The Star Wars actor is set to lead the cast in the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi movie, and will star as the son of Stacker Pentecost, the character played by Idris Elba in the original film.
Del Toro will produce the sequel, and is replaced on directorial duties by Daredevil producer Steven S.DeKnight.
In a statement, Del Toro said: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Boyega will also co-produce the film alongside Legendary Productions, after founding his own company.
He wrote on Twitter: “So happy! My company UpperRoom Productions founded by myself & @MrFemiOguns, will co-produce #PacificRim2 alongside @Legendary”
The first film saw giant humanoid robots doing battle against formidable sea creatures – and grossed over $400 million at the international box office.
Boyega is currently filming Star Wars: Episode 8, and will next be seen in The Circle, an adaptation of Dave Eggers’ sci-fi novel alongside Tom Hanks and Emma Watson.
