Heard’s team say he should ‘stop stalling’ and pay in full immediately
Johnny Depp has been accused by his ex-wife Amber Heard of stalling over their divorce settlement.
On August 19, Heard revealed that she would be donating Depp’s $7m (£5.3m) settlement to two charities, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) which focuses on domestic violence, and The Children’s Hospital Of Los Angeles, where Heard has volunteered for a decade.
Depp volunteered to pay the money directly to the charities, rather than give it to Heard to pass on. But Heard’s legal team say that Depp wants to pay the money in instalments rather than settle the two $3.5m donations in full immediately.
Heard’s lawyers also state that, because Depp can claim tax back on the donations, he should pay $14m (£10.6m) to equate to the $7m non-taxable settlement he would have had to pay to Heard.
A statement from Heard’s lawyers said: “Amber Heard appreciates Johnny Depp’s novel interest in supporting two of her favorite charities, the ACLU for domestic violence and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. This is great and unexpected news.
“However, if Johnny wishes to change the settlement agreement, we must insist that he honor the full amount by donating $14M to charity, which, after accounting for his tax deduction, is equal to his $7M payment obligation to Amber. We would also insist that the full amount be paid immediately and not drawn out over many years.
“Anything less would be a transparent attempt by Johnny’s counsel, Laura Wasser and Patti Glaser, to reduce their client’s true payment by half under the guise of newfound concern for charities that he has never previously supported.”
The couple married in February 2015 after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary, the first film in 19 years to be directed by Withanail And I’s Bruce Robinson.
The children’s hospital and ACLU confirmed they had received money from Depp since the divorce was finalised. A statement by Depp’s manager said: “Following Amber Heard’s announcement that her divorce settlement was to be divided equally and gifted to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union, two exceptionally deserving and important charities, Johnny Depp has sent the first of multiple installments of those monies to each charity in the name of Amber Heard, which when completed will honor the full amount of Ms. Heard’s pledge.”
