Denzel Washington, Will Ferrell and Tom Cruise also feature in Forbes magazine's annual list
Johnny Depp has been named Hollywood’s most overpaid star.
Depp, one of the highest-paid actors on the planet with estimated annual earnings of $30m (£20m), returned just $1.20 for every $1 he was paid according to Forbes magazine.
His poor performance was due to financial failure on movies including Mortdecai, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, which all bombed at the box office.
The latter in particular was the biggest turkey, with Disney losing upwards of $150m (£101 million) on the western.
Despite a bad year, Depp’s career is set to improve with a best Oscar nomination expected for his portrayal of Whitey Bulger in mob thriller Black Mass, which fell outside the current period measured by Forbes.
Denzel Washington came in second although none of his last three films including The Equalizer lost money.
Will Ferrell came in third while Liam Neeson and Will Smith finished in the top five. Christian Bale, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise also featured in the top 10.
Adam Sandler finished top of the list in 2013 and 2014. But he signed a deal to screen his next four films via Netflix in October last year, making him ineligible for this year’s rundown due to the absence of his latest projects from cinemas.
