However, Depp also says he respected his co-star's commitment to the film
Johnny Depp has revealed that he was less than friendly to Leonardo DiCaprio while they were making classic coming-of-age film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?.
DiCaprio earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1993 film as as Arnie Grape, a young man growing up with a developmental disability in a small Iowan town. Depp co-starred as his protective older brother, Gilbert.
“It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don’t know why,” Depp recalled in an interview with People.
“I tortured him,” Depp then said of DiCaprio, who is his 11 years his junior. “I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. ‘No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.'”
However, Depp also admitted that he was impressed by his co-star’s commitment to the film, saying: “I’d say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot. He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row.”
