Julia Roberts joins Ryan Murphy’s AIDS drama

Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons also star in 'The Normal Heart'

Julia Roberts has signed up for the next big screen project from Ryan Murphy.

The Glee creator has revealded that he is directing an adaptation of the stage play The Normal Heart, chronicling the rise of HIV and AIDS in the 80s.

And Roberts has joined the cast alongside a list of big hitters, Alec Baldwin, Matt Bomer and Jim Parsons, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Roberts will play the wheelchair-bound Dr Emma Brookner, one of the few medics in New York to take the disease seriously, with Baldwin portraying a lawyer struggling to deal with his brother’s sexual orientation.

White Collar‘s Bomer will take the role of a gay fashion journalist, while The Big Bang Theory star Parsons will reprise his role as a gay activist. Mark Ruffallo also stars as Ned Weeks, one of the first raise the alarm about the supposed ‘gay cancer’.

Murphy will direct from a script by Larry Kramer, adapted from his own autobiographical stage play.
