Kirsten Dunst to direct film adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s ‘The Bell Jar’ starring Dakota Fanning

The novel was first made into a film in 1979

Sylvia Plath’s classic novel The Bell Jar is set to be made into a film directed by actress Kirsten Dunst.

The project will be Dunst’s feature film directorial debut and will see Dakota Fanning play the lead role of Esther Greenwood, according to Deadline.

Plath published The Bell Jar in 1963, her only novel. It follows the story of Greenwood, a protagonist thought to be based on the author, as she struggles with mental illness. Plath killed herself a month after the book was published in the UK.

Dunst has co-written the script along with Nellie Kim. Fanning will produce the film alongside Lizzie Friedman, Karen Lauder, Greg Little and Brittany Kahan. Celine Rattray is executive producer.

The novel was first made into a film in 1979, directed by Larry Peerce and starring Marilyn Hassett.
