‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ sets record for biggest animated film opening in China

The DreamWorks film also topped the US box office

Kung Fu Panda 3 has a set a record for the best opening for an animated film in China.

The DreamWorks produced movie took in $57m (£39.7m) during its launch weekend in China and also topped the US box office.

Kung Fu Panda 3 is set in China with the film’s lead Po, played by Jack Black, meeting his biological father before confronting an evil supernatural warrior.

The third film in the franchise was a joint venture between DreamWorks Animation and Oriental DreamWorks, a DWA spin-off founded by Chinese investors with the aim of producing films for the Chinese market.

Kung Fu Panda 3 will not be included in China’s 34-film annual quota for US-made films because it was co-produced in the country. As a result, it is also permitted to play longer than the 30-day limit on foreign films.

A Mandarin language version of the film will also be released in China featuring a voice cast that includes Jackie Chan.

Minions had previously held the record for the top animated opener in China, taking in $50m (£34.8m) in its first eight days.
