‘Man Of Steel’ breaks US box office record in opening weekend

Superman reboot starring Henry Cavill also proving incredibly popular with UK cinema-goers

New Superman movie Man Of Steel has set a new US box office record in its opening weekend.

The reboot starring British actor Henry Cavill raked in $125 million (£80 million) over its opening weekend – the highest ever total for a June opening. The previous June record was set by Toy Story 3, which opened to $110 million (£70 million) in June 2010.

Man Of Steel is also proving incredibly popular with British cinema-goers. After opening on Friday (June 14), the blockbuster went on to gross £10.9m – some 75% of the total UK box office this weekend.

Alongside Cavill, Man Of Steel stars Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Superman’s biological father Jor-El and Michael Shannon as the villainous General Zod. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane appear as Clark’s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent.

According to reports, a sequel has already been given the go-ahead by Warner Bros. Director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S Goyer are both set to return, as is producer Christopher Nolan, though his involvement apparently won’t be as “full blown” second time out.
