Marvel eye up directors for ‘Doctor Strange’

Mark Andrews , Nikolaj Arcel, Dean Israelite and Jonathan Levine are all in the running, say reports

Marvel are reportedly close to hiring a director to helm their Doctor Strange movie adaptation, according to reports.

Doctor Strange is a neurosurgeon who, after losing control of his hands, heads to the Himalayas where he’s taught mystic arts and later becomes known as ‘the mightiest magician in the cosmos’.

There have long been rumours that a film featuring the magician, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the ’60s, would appear – and last year, Marvel’s president of production Kevin Feige confirmed the company’s plans to go-ahead with the project.

Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the company have lined up a shortlist of four potential directors: Brave filmmaker Mark Andrews, A Royal Affair‘s Nikolaj Arcel, Welcome To Yesterday director Dean Israelite and Jonathan Levine, who has worked on the likes of Warm Bodies and 50/50. The script, meanwhile, could be written by pair Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger, whose previous credits include Kung Fu Panda.

Marvel have a number of high-profile films currently in development including Ant-Man, which will be directed by Shaun Of The Dead‘s Edgar Wright, and Guardians Of The Galaxy, which boasts a bumper ensemble cast including Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
