The role will feature in 2020's 'The Eternals'
Marvel are looking to cast their first openly gay superhero, it has been reported.
During promotion for 2018’s Ant-Man And The Wasp, the studio’s president Kevin Feige said Marvel was working towards introducing a new LGBTQ character into the cinematic universe with 2020’s The Eternals.
Now, according to That Hashtag Show, Marvel have given more details of what they’re looking for. The studio is said to be searching for an actor who “physically looks like a superhero” and is between the ages of 30 and 49. There is no preference over ethnicity, however, they would prefer the part to go to an openly gay actor.
The Eternals are a superhero team, including characters like Sersi, Ikaris, and Piper. The identity of the proposed gay character is currently being kept under wraps and it is unknown if it will be a completely new character or one that has previously been seen in the comic books.
The film is scheduled to beginning shooting in the UK in September and will be released in 2020. It will be directed by Chloé Zhao, who was behind the camera for 2017 western movie The Rider.
Meanwhile, Captain Marvel, Marvel’s first film led by a female superhero, is set for release on Friday (March 8). Brie Larson plays the titular role, alongside appearances from Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, and Annette Bening.
The first reactions to the film emerged on social media last month, with critics praising both it and Larson. “Has some cool surprises that I definitely didn’t see coming, and the mystery/origin it weaves is engaging and fun,” wrote one reviewer on Twitter.
An official synopsis for Captain Marvel reads: “The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
