Marvel planning ‘Captain America 3’

Studio eager to begin work on follow-up to 'The Winter Soldier'

A third film in the Captain America franchise is already in the works at Marvel, according to reports.

Variety says that studio bosses are already planning a new outing for the superhero even though the second film in the series, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will not be released until April of this year (2014).

Sources say that Marvel are happy at the early positive reaction to the film and are eager for directors Joe and Anthony Russo to return and helm another film. Although no negotiations have begun about the project, it is thought that Marvel have already begun to discuss the focus and plot of a third film.

Chris Evans has reprised his role as Steve Rogers for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and is joined sequel by Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury. Meanwhile, Anthony Mackie plays a superhero called the Falcon who has the ability to fly and Robert Redford appears as a a senior official within government agency SHIELD.

Marvel’s plot synopsis reads: “After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, DC and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a SHIELD colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk.”

The synopsis continues: “Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier.”
