Marvel to release different version of ‘Iron Man 3’ in China

Alternate version to feature more Beijing footage and Fan Bingbing appearance

Marvel Studios will release a different version of Iron Man 3 in China.

After collaborating with the Chinese government to make the film, which included shooting several sequences in Beijing, the Chinese version will feature extra footage shot there specifically for the release, while Fan Bingbing will also appear. It’s not known if she will be playing herself or whether the appearance will serve as a taster of her role in X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

Bingbing is among the biggest stars in the country, and was recently added to the cast of the forthcoming X-Men film by director Bryan Singer, who made the announcement via his Twitter page. She’ll play Blink, a purple-skinned mutant with powers of teleportation. The Chinese government keep a tight lock on the number of foreign films screened in the country each year, while its censors are similarly strict over the content of those movies.

American film studios know shooting part of a film in China will dramatically increase the chances their film is let through by the Chinese censors, however. China’s film market has grown significantly in recent years, and many expect it to rival the US in terms of box office numbers within the next 10 years. Iron Man 3 opens in the UK on April 26.
