It's the director's fourth sci-fi film following 'Alien', 'Blade Runner' and 'Prometheus'
A new trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Martian has been released.
Based on Andy Weir’s acclaimed 2011 sci-fi novel of the same name, The Martian stars Matt Damon as an American astronaut forced to improvise to survive when he becomes stranded on Mars. The film’s impressive supporting cast includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sean Bean and Donald Glover.
Scott directs from a script by Drew Goddard (Cloverfield/The Cabin In The Woods). The film’s official plot synopsis teases: “During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.
“Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring ‘the Martian’ home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.”
The Martian – Scott’s fourth sci-fi film after Alien, Blade Runner and Prometheus – will open in UK cinemas on September 30.
