Both actors would show off their singing voices in the Hollywood adaptation of the Sondheim musical
Meryl Streep and James Corden are set to star in the Hollywood adaptation of Sondheim musical Into The Woods.
According to Broadway World, the triple Oscar winner is in talks to appear as the Witch, a role which involves several musical numbers. Meanwhile, Gavin And Stacey‘s Corden may play the Baker, a part which also tests the vocal cords.
Though known mainly as an actress, Streep has shown off her singing talents on screen before. She famously starred in 2008’s film version of ABBA musical Mamma Mia! and played a country singer in 2006’s A Prairie Home Companion.
The screen version of Into The Woods is being directed by Rob Marshall, who helmed previous musical movies Chicago and Nine. The film is based on a 1986 Stephen Sondheim musical which intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairytales and features characters like Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood.
Talent has yet to be confirmed, but Marshall held a screenplay reading in New York on Monday (August 1) featuring a slew of potential cast members. Those participating included Corden, Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, Alison Janney and Christine Baranski. Streep was not present.
