Michael Fassbender stars in new ‘Macbeth’ trailer – watch

Marion Cotillard co-stars in Oscar-tipped adaptation of Shakespeare's classic play

A new trailer for the forthcoming film adaptation of Macbeth starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard has been released.

Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel (Snowtown, The Turning) directs what is billed as a “visceral and visually breathtaking retelling” of Shakespeare’s classic play about an ambitious Scottish Lord and his equally power-hungry wife.

Alongside Fassbender in the title role and Cotillard as Lady Macbeth, the film’s supporting cast includes Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, Elizabeth Debicki, Jack Reynor and David Thewlis.

Kurzel shot the film in February and March of last year at various locations in England and Scotland. Iain Canning, one of the producers of the Oscar-winning British film The King’s Speech, and Laura Hastings-Smith (Hunger) served as producers.

Macbeth premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May to predominantly positive reviews and is already generating Oscar buzz. It opens in UK cinemas on October 2. Fassbender previously received an Oscar nomination for his role in 2013’s 12 Years A Slave, while Cotillard won the Best Actress prize for her performance as Edith Piaf in 2007’s La Vie En Rose and notched up a second nomination for last year’s Two Days, One Night.
