‘Minder’ actor George Cole dies, aged 90

Arthur Daley actor passes away in hospital following a short illness

Minder star George Cole has passed away at the age of 90.

The actor’s agent, Derek Webster, said in a statement to the press this morning: “It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad death of one of our most loved and respected actors. George Cole passed away yesterday at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after a short illness. His wife Penny and his son Toby were with him at his bedside.”

Cole’s film and TV career spanned more than seven decades, but he was best known for his role as dodgy cockney wheeler dealer Arthur Daley in long-running ITV comedy-drama Minder, which he played from 1979 to 1994. He also appeared as Flash Harry in the four original St Trinian’s films and starred in the BBC sitcom Dad from 1997 to 1999.

More recently, Cole made guest appearances in Midsomer Murders, New Tricks and Agatha Christie’s Marple. He was awarded an O.B.E by the Queen for services to drama in 1992 and released his autobiography, The World Was My Lobster, in 2013.

George Cole is survived by his second wife, Penny, whom he married in 1967, and by his two children, Tara and Toby.
