Minions has overtaken Toy Story 3 to become the second highest-grossing animated movie of all time.
Since opening in cinemas in June, the Despicable Me spin-off featuring the voices of Sandra Bullock and John Hamm has raked in $1.08 billion (£700 million) at the global box office – a shade more than Toy Story 3‘s $1.06 billion (£690 million).
The only animated movie to have grossed more than Minions is Disney’s Frozen, which earned $1.27 billion (£820 million), enough to place eighth on the all-time list. Minions‘ $1.08 billion places it 15th on the all-time list.
Though a Minions sequel has yet to be announced, the creatures will return in Despicable Me 3, which is set for release in Christmas 2017.
Last month a giant Minions balloon escaped from its restraints and managed to stop traffic in Dublin. Fortunately no one was injured by the escaped balloon, though one driver had a wing mirror knocked off his car as it landed.
Meanwhile, Jurassic World has recently overtaken The Avengers to become the third highest-grossing film of all-time.
