‘Mrs Doubtfire’ stage musical in the works

Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken is writing music for the project, which is 'in its early stages'

A stage musical version of classic comedy Mrs Doubtfire is in the works.

Composer Alan Menken – best known for his Oscar-winning scores to Disney films The Little Mermaid and Aladdin – has revealed that he is writing music for the show, with David Zippel (Hercules, Mulan) penning the lyrics. Meanwhile, Tony Award-winning actor/playwright Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles) is writing the musical’s book.

“It’s going very well, it’s in its early stages, and that’s probably all I can say,” Menken said during an interview with Entertainment Weekly radio. “We’re really enjoying working on it.”

Based on Anne Fine’s novel Alias Madame Doubtfire, the 1993 film Mrs Doubtfire starred Robin Williams as an estranged husband who disguises himself as a female housekeeper in order to spend time with his children. Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan and Mara Wilson co-starred.

A sequel had gone into development last year but Fox cancelled it following Williams’ death in August. The San Francisco house used in the 1993 film was set on fire in an arson attack earlier this month (January).
