Nia Vardalos and John Corbett are reprising their roles from the massive 2002 sleeper hit
My Big Fat Big Greek Wedding 2 is to open in cinemas on March 25, 2016 – the same weekend as Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Nia Vardalos and John Corbett are reprising their roles from the original film, which became a massive sleeper hit in 2002, grossing over $368 million (£235 million) at cinemas globally from a modest $5 million (£3 million) budget. It also spawned a short-lived sitcom, My Big Fat Greek Life, which ran for seven episodes on CBS the following year.
Vardalos has written the script for the sequel, having also penned the original film’s Oscar-nominated screenplay. The producers of the original – Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Gary Goetzman – are also producing the sequel. British director Kirk Jones (What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Nanny McPhee) will be behind the camera, THR reports.
The sequel started shooting on May 10 and Vardalos has revealed on Instagram that “the story is about me being a mom”. She and Corbett are joined in the sequel by fellow original My Big Fat Greek Wedding stars Lainie Kazan, Andrea Martin, Louis Mandylor and Gia Carides, who played colourful members of Vardalos’s character’s family. *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone also appeared in in the original film, but it is unknown whether he will be back for a sequel.
