A new featurette of Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim has landed online – you can watch it by scrolling below and clicking ‘play’.
The latest production video sees the Pan’s Labyrinth director discuss the practical problems the crew had to overcome to shoot the monster movie’s action scenes. He also admits that the machinery the actors used to bring the Jaegers to life were akin to “torture devices”.
Del Toro has called Pacific Rim “a beautiful poem to giant monsters” inspired by classic Japanese monster movies like Godzilla. The film is set in the not-too-distant future and follows the human race’s battle to defeat an incredibly powerful race of monsters called the “Kaiju” that have emerged mysteriously from the ocean.
To combat the “Kaiju”, scientists build a battalion of giant robots called “Jaegers” that are operated by two human soldiers simultaneously. When the Kaiju and Jaegers clash, the results aren’t exactly pretty.
Pacific Rim stars Luther‘s Idris Elba, Sons Of Anarchy actor Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It’s set to stomp into UK cinemas on July 12.
