Ensemble comedy-drama also features Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis and Ewan McGregor
A new trailer for possible Oscar contender August: Osage County has been released. Watch it below.
The ensemble comedy-drama is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Tracy Letts. It centres on an explosive family reunion dominated by Meryl Streep‘s sharp-tongued matriarch, who dishes out harsh home truths to her daughters as they mourn the death of their father.
Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis and Juliette Nicholson co-star as the daughters, flanked by an impressive supporting cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Sam Shephard, Margo Martindale and Abigail Breslin. John Wells (The Company Men) directed from a script by Letts.
The film was tipped as a leading Oscar contender before it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday (September 9) but early reviews were somewhat mixed. However, the cast drew praise for their performances and Streep, Roberts and Martindale are all likely to be in contention when nominations are announced on January 16 next year (2014).
August: Osage County is released in the US on December 25 before opening in UK cinemas a day later on December 26.
