Directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code), the film follows the rivalry between hard-partying British racing driver James Hunt and his more disciplined Austrian adversary Niki Lauda as they battle for the 1976 world championship. Thor actor Chris Hemsworth stars as Hunt, while Daniel Brühl from Inglourious Basterds plays Lauda.
The film has a script by Peter Morgan, whose previous screenplays include The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Last King Of Scotland. Morgan is also writing the forthcoming biopic of Freddie Mercury starring Sacha Baron Cohen.
Howard shot scenes at several real-life motor racing circuits, including Brands Hatch in Kent, Snetterton in Norfolk, Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire and the famous Nürburgring in Germany. The film uses a mix of vintage Formula One cars and replicas.
The cast also includes Natalie Dormer from Game Of Thrones and Tron: Legacy‘s Olivia Wilde. Rush drives into UK cinemas on September 13 before arriving in US cinemas a week later on September 20.
