The film, simply titled Riddick, is the third instalment in the dark sci-fi saga. Diesel first played antihero Richard B Riddick in 2000’s Pitch Black before returning for 2004’s The Chronicles Of Riddick. Both films were written and directed by David Twohy.
Twohy has also served as writer-director on the new movie. Karl Urban, who played the villainous Vaako in The Chronicles Of Riddick, has reprised his role, while Battlestar Galactica‘s Katee Sackhoff (pictured right) is a new addition to the cast.
According to the official plot synopsis, the film begins with Riddick fighting for survival on a barren planet occupied by deadly alien predators. His only option is to alert mercenaries by activating an emergency beacon, but in the process he also stirs up one of his old rivals.
Riddick opens in UK cinemas on September 6. Meanwhile, Diesel is due to start shooting the next Fast & Furious movie in August. Since its release last month (May), Fast & Furious 6 has become the most successful film in the franchise yet after raking in over $636 million (£405 million) at the box office worldwide.
