New trailer released for ‘Elysium’ starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster – watch

The eagerly-anticipated sci-fi film opens in UK cinemas on August 23

A new trailer for Elysium starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster has been released. Scroll down and click ‘play’ to watch it.

The eagerly-anticipated sci-fi film is set in the year 2159 and finds the human race hopelessly divided. A wealthy elite lives on a flawless man-made space station called Elysium, but the rest of the population is trapped on a ravaged planet Earth, which is now rife with crime and poverty.

Damon stars as an ordinary man from Earth who takes on a dangerous mission to enter Elysium by breaching its strict anti-immigration laws. Foster plays Elysium’s ruthless mayor, a woman who’ll stop at nothing to keep him – and anyone else deemed “undesirable” – out of the artificial paradise.

Elysium is the second picture from writer-director Neill Blomkamp, who made his big screen debut with another sci-fi film, District 9, which became a surprise hit back in 2009. Made for just $30 million (£20 million) with a relatively unknown cast, District 9 went on to gross over $210 million (£140 million) at the box office worldwide.

Elysium was made on a much larger budget of around $120 million (£80 million). It opens in the US on August 9 and arrives in UK cinemas a fortnight later on August 23.
