The acclaimed Drive director wants in on the comic book boom
Drive and The Neon Demon director Nicolas Winding Refn has revealed that he would like to make a Batgirl movie.
Batgirl is rumoured to make an appearance in the upcoming Harley Quinn standalone film, set to be released following this summer’s Suicide Squad.
Speaking to Business Insider, Refn said: “What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”
He continued, “I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money, and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.”
The Neon Demon was released this week. Elle Fanning stars as Jesse, flanked by a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Abbey Lee, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote and Alessandro Nivola. The film’s score is composed by former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Cliff Martinez, who also collaborated with Winding Refn on Drive and Only God Forgives.
Winding Refn has said of the film’s origins: “One morning I woke and realised I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty.
“After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon. This movie is a manifestation of the strong ties between us and will lead to many more adventures.”
