Oscar nominations 2020: ‘Joker’ leads the pack with 11 nods

'The Irishman' and '1917' follow with 10 each

The 2020 Oscar nominations have been announced via a global live stream, ahead of the winners ceremony on February 9.

Actor and producer John Cho (Star Trek) and actor/writer/producer Issa Rae (Insecure) hosted the two-part live presentation, which announced the shortlist for categories such as Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role and Costume Design before the second part of the ceremony revealed the names up for awards like Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role and Best Picture.

Joker led the way with 11 nominations in categories such as Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. The Irishman was close behind with 10 nods, including two Supporting Actor nominations (Joe Pesci, Al Pacino) and Best Director for Martin Scorsese. Sam Mendes’ WWI film also racked up 10 nods.

Renée Zellweger (Judy) and Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) were among the Best Actress candidates – the only acting award to nominate a person of colour (Harriet‘s Cynthia Erivo). Meanwhile, it was a strong year for streaming platform Netflix, which saw its original films The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes help to add to its biggest nominations tally ever at the Oscars.
