James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are officially signed up too…
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will both appear in the next X-Men movie.
The veteran actors starred in the original trilogy of X-Men films between 2000 and 2006. Stewart played Professor Xavier, while McKellen portrayed his rival Magneto.
Last year (2011), Marvel Studios revived the franchise with a well-received prequel called X-Men: First Class. James McAvoy played a younger version of Xavier, while Michael Fassbender took on the Magneto role.
A follow-up to First Class is now in the works – titled X Men: Days Of Future Past. It will be directed by Bryan Singer, who took to Twitter yesterday (November 27) to make a couple of casting announcements.
In his first tweet, Singer wrote: “I’d like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, & Nicholas Hoult to #XMEN for#DaysOfFuturePast.”
A minute later, he posted:
X Men: Days Of Future Past begins filming early next year (2013) and is scheduled for release on July 18, 2014. It has a script by Simon Kinberg, who has previously revealed that the story will focus on Magneto, the character played by Fassbender and McKellen.
