An unlikely campaign to secure Nicolas Cage as the next Superman is gaining momentum online, after the reported departure of Henry Cavill.
Earlier this week, it was claimed that Cavill will depart the role after negotiations broke down with Warner Bros over a cameo in the forthcoming Shazam! In a subsequent statement, Warner Bros refused to confirm his departure. For his part, Cavill released a bizarre Instagram video that saw him showing off a Superman t-shirt.
But as the rumour mill continues to swirl, the internet has one man in mind – Nicolas Cage.
The actor is known to be a huge Superman fan and famously named his son Kal-El, the birth name of the comic hero on his home planet Krypton.
Posting on Twitter, one fan wrote: “With Henry Cavill out, there’s only one person who can save the DCEU and it’s Nicolas Cage as Superman, finally.”
Another argued: “Good Luck WB trying to find a better Superman than Henry Cavill. It’s Nicolas Cage’s turn.”

Nicolas Cage is such a huge Superman fan that one of his sons is named "Kal-El Coppola Cage" (not kidding!) and owned a copy of the original Superman comic.

Amid the speculation about Cage’s departure, it was claimed that Warner Bros plans to focus on a Supergirl movie next. If that is the case, that move will take the actor out of the picture – in the Supergirl stories, Superman is just a baby.
According to a source, Warnersis unlikely to make another solo Superman movie for several years now. “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors,” they said.
