Rami Malek discusses challenge of wearing Freddie Mercury’s “pretty difficult” teeth

"They started out being pretty difficult to deal with"

Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek has revealed how he got to grips with Freddie Mercury’s teeth as he tackled the role of the legendary Queen frontman.

The acclaimed portrayal of Mercury saw Malek donning a set of prominent false teeth to reflect how the star had four extra teeth in the back of his jaw, which pushed his front gnashers forward.

In a new interview with The Wrap, Malek says that the teeth initially made him feel insecure – before he eventually realised how essential they were to the essence of the character.

“They started out being pretty difficult to deal with,” Malek explained. “We tried out all different sizes and when they first went in I felt very insecure, but immediately I compensated.”

Describing how he eventually came round to the idea, Malek said: “Physically, I started to sit with more posture and elegance and I thought, ‘Oh, he is so elegant!'”

“You see him covering up his lips and his teeth all the time, and I could never quite get the hang of it. But as soon as those teeth went in, it was done. It was little things like that that were very informative for me.”

In the same interview, Malek also described how he lost weight and then bulked up as part of a physically punishing exercise regime to prepare for the role.

“I think that’s the most important takeaway from all of this – that the music and his story are going to outlive us all,” he explained.

“The gift of playing him is everything to me. He’s a human being who struggled so much, with every aspect of his identity, his heritage and obviously his sexual identity.”
