Titled 'Life On The Road', the film will follow Gervais's David Brent as he plots a UK tour
David Brent is set to make his big screen debut after Ricky Gervais secured financing for his The Office spin-off film.
Titled Life On The Road, the documentary-style film will follow Gervais’s former paper merchants boss as he tries to drum up funds to take his band Foregone Conclusion on tour. Gervais, the spin-off’s writer-director-star, revealed last year that he has written “all new tracks” for the film.
Announcing yesterday (May 12) that Life On The Road will be financed by BBC Films and Canadian indie film company Entertainment One, Gervais said in a statement: “I’m so excited that the world will see what David Brent is up to now and where his future lies. This film delves much more into his private life than The Office ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man.”
David Brent first appeared in The Office, created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant, which ran for 12 episodes on BBC Two and then BBC One between 2001 and 2003. A US remake starring Steve Carell followed in 2005 and ran for nine seasons until 2013.
Gervais revived the character in 2013 for a YouTube series titled Learn Guitar With David Brent and later played a series of live dates in character as Brent, performing songs including ‘Freelove Freeway’ and ‘Equality Street’.
