The new series is being filmed in a purpose-built arena that's described as 'literally bullet-proof'
The BBC has announced that it is bringing back Robot Wars.
The cult tech game show will return to BBC Two later this year for six hour-long episodes filmed in a purpose-built arena in Glasgow which is described as “literally bullet-proof”.
Robot Wars, which sees home-made robots go head-to-head in a knock-out competition, originally ran on BBC Two and then BBC Choice from 1998 to 2003. Channel 5 then picked it up for a final season which ended in 2004.
The BBC’s acting controller of entertainment told Broadcast that the idea of a “redeveloped Robot Wars proved compelling – offering a mix of real people, real passion and raw power.
Chris Brogden of Tinopolis, the production company behind the revival, said the new series “promises to be quite the competition, [featuring] new and improved robots, with extraordinary innovation and power in these updated machines”.
It has yet to be announced whether Craig Charles, who hosted Robot Wars from 1998 to 2004, will be returning for the reboot. Other presenters who worked on the show during his initial run included Philippa Forrester, Julia Reed and Jayne Middlemiss.
