Ryan Reynolds ‘X-Men’ spin-off ‘Deadpool’ set for 2016

The popularity of leaked test footage appears to have convinced Fox to greenlight the hero movie

Ryan Reynolds is tipped to return to the role of Wade Wilson and star in the X-Men spin-off Deadpool.

The popularity of leaked test footage shot several years ago, which only surfaced online during the summer, appears to have convinced Fox to greenlight the film for release in February 2016.

Fans had taken to social media campaigning to see a return to the big screen for the anti-hero. Reynolds made his first appearance as Deadpool in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Speaking to the Niagara Falls Review the actor said the movie had been in ‘limbo” for a while. “There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually,” he said. “And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.”

Producer Simon Kinberg has suggested the best way to realize the character on screen would be with a more adult-oriented, darker movie.

A chatterbox mercenary with a range of powers that include rapid healing, Deadpool – aka Wade Wilson – first appeared in the Marvel ‘New Mutants’ comic back in 1991.

Seemingly killed by decapitation at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool appeared in a post-credits sequence rising from the ground and whispering “shush” to camera.
