Scarlett Johansson says Black Widow is her favourite role to date

"It’s a character that’s really enigmatic"

Scarlett Johansson has said that the Black Widow – a.k.a. Natasha Romanova – is her favourite role to date.

Johansson has played the Black Widow a total of five times, appearing in 2010’s Iron Man 2, 2012’s The Avengers, 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, released earlier this year.

Speaking to Michigan Avenue, Johansson was asked which of her many film roles was her favourite to date. She replied: “I really like playing Natasha; playing the Black Widow. It’s been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person.”

Continuing, she said: “It’s a character that’s really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there’s a lot for me to play off of.” Johansson recently called for more diversity in Hollywood, following the Academy’s move to invite a more broad spectrum of industry members to join.

“It’s awesome to have a diverse group of people in an organisation like that,” she told the Chicago Sun-Times of the Academy’s inclusion of 683 new members, 46 per cent of whom were female and 41 per cent of whom were non-white. “You need to have different points of view and different perspectives,” she continued.

“Of course, it’s also the studios who ultimately will make the movies, but I think when the audiences speak loudly and tell the studios what they want to watch, there’s an ear there.”
