Rogen plays a walking, talking sausage called Frank in the grown-up animated movie
Seth Rogen has revealed that he and the makers of Sausage Party had to remove pubic hair from a pitta bread’s “ball sack” to ensure the animated movie got the certificate they wanted.
Co-written by and starring Rogen, Sausage Party is a very grown-up parody of Disney Pixar movies like Finding Dory and Toy Story that centres on a group of walking, talking food items. Rogen lends his voice to a sausage called Frank, while Kristen Wiig plays a hot dog bun named Brenda and Salma Hayek voices a taco called Teresa.
During an interview on Howard Stern’s radio show, Rogen admitted that he and the film’s producers fully anticipated having to cut jokes from the film in order to secure an NC-17 certificate from the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) instead of more restrictive R rating.
“Our fear was that it would then create this big negotiation process where we ultimately had to butcher the fucking thing, you know?” Rogen explained, before revealing that the Sausage Party team expected the film’s orgy scene to be the most problematic for censors.
“We probably added six things into the orgy that we were like, ‘OK, these are like our sacrificial lambs,'” Rogen explained. “They are the chips that we’re willing to lose. And we lost like an eighth of one of them.”
The thing they lost, Rogen explained, was fairly cosmetic. “There is a pitta bread and you see his ballsack in the orgy and it had hair on it. And they asked us to remove the hair from the pitta bread’s ball sack. So we digitally shaved the pitta bread’s ballsack and removed the hair from it.”
Sausage Party opens in US cinemas this Friday (August 12) before hitting UK screens in September. Watch the latest trailer below.
