‘Sex And The City’ star Kim Cattrall denies ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ role

Actress insists she has not been approached to play Elena, a 'Mrs Robinson' figure from the novels

Kim Cattrall has denied being in discussions for Fifty Shades Of Grey.

The 55-year-old actress, best known for playing Samantha in Sex And The City, has been attached to the role of Elena in the big screen adaptation. In the novels, Elena is portrayed as a ‘Mrs Robinson’-like figure who seduces the young Christian Grey and introduces him to the world of BDSM.

However, when asked about the part by The Sun, Cattrall replied: “No one has told me about that, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book.” Other actresses tipped to play Elena include Angelina Jolie and Demi Moore.

The screen rights to Fifty Shades Of Grey – which traces the sexual relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey – have been acquired by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. The film is being produced by Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who previously worked together on The Social Network.

Casting for the film is a hot topic. Last week, Harry Potter star Emma Watson denied reading a script for the film, while teen stars Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson have also been linked to the Steele role. Melrose Place actress Katie Cassidy (pictured) is said to be in contention for two separate parts in the film.

Meanwhile, Lost‘s Ian Somerhalder and True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård are rumoured to be vying to play Grey. Earlier this month (July), Channing Tatum admitted he is interested in the male lead – but only if he can star alongside his wife, Jenna Dewan.

Since being published last year, Fifty Shades Of Grey has become notorious for its explicit sexual content and controversial portrayal of a relationship involving BDSM. The three novels by British author EL James have now sold more than 31 million copies worldwide.
