It's titled 'Sister' and it's based on a short story Sia wrote eight years ago
Sia has revealed plans to direct a film starring Maddie Ziegler, the dancer from her ‘Chandelier’, ‘Elastic Heart’ and ‘Big Girls Cry’ videos.
The singer-songwriter has already written the script for the film, which is titled Sister, with help from children’s author Dalles Clayton. The script is based on a short story Sia wrote eight years ago.
“I was too embarrassed to tell anyone I wanted to make a movie,” Sia explained during a panel at the Venice Film Festival attended by The Hollywood Reporter. “And then last year after I made the ‘Chandelier’ video, I realised that I was pretty good at directing, so I felt a little bit braver.”
Discussing how she wrote the script, Sia explained: “For me, the process was basically, I work out the movie. I’ll act it out, I’ll have the dialogue already in my head… I can’t be bothered to learn [screenwriting software] Final Draft. I’m not a technical person. Like, when I sing, I just want to sing the melody and write the lyrics. I don’t want to have to do production, which is very technical. I don’t enjoy that.”
She also revealed that she has taken notes on her script from several friends in the film and TV industry, including actor Joel Edgerton, comedian Whitney Cummings and her husband, documentary-maker Erik Anders Lang. “Erik, my husband, gave the best notes actually,” she said.
Sia made her directorial debut with last year’s ‘Chandelier’ video, and also directed the ‘Big Girls Cry’ video and co-directed the controversial ‘Elastic Heart’ video, which stars Ziegler and Shia LaBeouf.
