Simon Pegg hired to co-write ‘Star Trek 3’

It's expected to be released next year to coincide with 'Star Trek's 50th anniversary

Simon Pegg has been hired to co-write the next Star Trek film.

Pegg – who plays Scotty in the sci-fi franchise – will co-write the screenplay for Star Trek 3 with Doug Jung, creator of US action TV series Dark Blue, Deadline reports.

Fast and the Furious director Justin Lin will be behind the camera on Star Trek 3 after being hired last month (December). He takes over from JJ Abrams, who directed 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness but is now focusing on the new Star Wars movie.

Star Trek 3 film has no official release date or title yet but is expected to be released in July 2016 to coincide with the sci-fi franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Pegg’s previous screenwriting credits include Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End, all of which he co-wrote with director Edgar Wright. He also co-wrote 2011’s Paul with Nick Frost.
