‘Skyfall’ becomes first James Bond movie to make $1 billion worldwide

Daniel Craig's third outing as the British spy takes £100 million in UK box office alone

Skyfall has become the first James Bond movie to make $1 billion (£620 million) worldwide.

The spy film, starring Daniel Craig in the lead role as James Bond, was also the first movie in the film franchise’s 50-year history to take over £100 million in the UK box office alone.

Skyfall has earned just over $289 million (£179 million) at the US box office and around $710 million from international territories. The movie is expected to earn more in 2013, as the film will be distributed in China.

The 23rd film in the franchise, which sees James Bond square off against Javier Bardem’s blond-haired villain Raoul Silva, is still on general distribution at cinemas two months after its release.

The previous highest earner in the franchise was 2006’s Casino Royale – Daniel Craig’s debut as the new bond – which took just under $600 million from cinema box office when it was released.

Daniel Craig, who makes his third appearance as the iconic spy in Skyfall, is already confirmed for at least two more outings. Last month (November 2012), he dismissed reports that the Bond franchise will continue with a new 007 story spread over two separate films.
