Spider-Man can now appear on screen alongside Iron Man, Captain America and Hulk
Spider-Man will appear in a Marvel movie for the first time under a new deal between the Disney-owned entertainment company and Sony Pictures.
Under the deal, Spider-Man’s next big screen appearance will be in an upcoming Marvel film. Which one has yet to be announced, but Spider-Man can now potentially appear on screen alongside much-loved superheroes like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.
The webslinger will then star in the next instalment in Sony’s Spider-Man series, which is set for release on July 28, 2017. For the first time, Marvel’s president Kevin Feige will server as a producer on one of Sony’s Spider-Man films, working alongside Sony’s Amy Pascal, a veteran of the studio’s Spider-Man movies.
Marvel and Sony also announced in a press release that they are “exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) into future Spider-Man films”.
Feige said of the deal: “I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie. Amy has been deeply involved in the realisation on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”
Sony successfully rebooted its Spider-Man franchise with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. However, last year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was less well-received, fuelling longstanding rumours that Sony and Marvel might agree to collaborate on the webslinger’s big screen appearances in the future.
