‘Star Trek 3’ director Roberto Orci teases storyline details

The film is set for a 2016 release

Star Trek 3 director Roberto Orci – who is replacing JJ Abrams as director on the next film – has said that the characters in the upcoming sequel will be closer to their television incarnations than in previous films.

Details regarding the film are few, but Orci also revealed that the third film will take place in “deep space”.

“With Into Darkness, they set out finally where the original series started,” says Orci. “The first two films – especially the 2009 film – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie.”

He added: “So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission, so their adventure is going to be in deep space.”
