A fan favourite was notably missing from the latest film in the franchise
The latest film in the franchise was released last week (December 14) and stars the likes of Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), and more.
In a new interview, Johnson addressed Lando Calrissian’s absence from the movie, explaining that he did consider using him at least briefly. “Of course I’d love to see Lando,” he told The Playlist. “In terms of Lando, I briefly considered – would be work in the Benicio [del Toro’s] part [DJ]?”
But, he added: “I don’t think you would ever buy that Lando would just completely betray the characters like that and have that level of moral ambiguity. Cause we love Lando and you come into it with that [expectation].”
He continued: “And also, DJ, the character that they met, for the purposes of Finn’s character, had to be a morally ambiguous character that you’re not sure about, that you’re guessing about, and we already know that we love the character of Lando so it just wouldn’t have played in that part story-wise.”
Johnson also said the decision to leave Calrissian out of The Last Jedi was down to a need to write “organically”. “Otherwise it leads to contrived places,” he said. “Which is just to say it’s all about the needs of the story and there’s only so much room on the table for… favourite characters to be in the movie.”
Calrissian may have been missing in The Last Jedi, but he has already been confirmed to return in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He will be played by Donald Glover in the spin-off, which will be released on May 25, 2018 in the UK.
