‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ overtakes ‘Skyfall’ as UK’s highest-grossing film ever

'Star Wars' topples 007

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the highest grossing film of all-time in the UK after just over three weeks of release.

The seventh Star Wars instalment has overtaken 2012 James Bond film Skyfall as the UK’s biggest ever film release. It has made £103.2m to date.

The Force Awakens took 22 days to overtake Skyfall, which became previously held the title after 66 days of release in 2012.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has also become the top-earning film of all time in the US and Canada.

Disney recently confirmed that the film has overtaken Avatar to take the title having broken the animated film’s previous earnings record of £520m.

Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time globally, having made £1.87 billion since its 2009 release. However, that could change when The Force Awakens is released in China later this month.

Disney are thought to be planning a new Star Wars movie every year from 2015 onwards, including both a new trilogy and a series of spin-off movies taking the series through to around 2020.
