Director Rian Johnson and the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday (December 1) to discuss the upcoming release of the new film.
Johnson was joined by Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. They were all later joined by John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran and Laura Dern.
Kimmel pressed Johnson for any clues about the film and asked if he could tell the audience the first word spoken in the movie. “I can do that,” Johnson replied. “It’s ‘we’re’.” You can watch that moment below.
During the show, Hamill also spoke of his shock when he learned that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father – a secret he couldn’t reveal for 18 months. He later showed off his Harrison Ford impression which you can towards the end of the video below.
Meanwhile, director Rian Johnson has revealed the “one thing” that he hopes cinemagoers will be surprised about with the new film.
“That’s one thing I hope people will be surprised about with the movie,” Johnson told Rolling Stone when asked if the new film would take on a darker tone. “I think it’s very funny. The trailers have been kind of dark – the movie has that, but I also made a real conscious effort for it to be a riot.
“I want it to have all the things tonally that I associate with Star Wars, which is not just the Wagner of it. It’s also the Flash Gordon.”
Ridley, who plays Rey, said that her surprise derived from how “there’s a few storylines that [are] sort of coming together and connecting.”
The Last Jedi will hit cinemas on December 14, with the film a direct sequel to 2015’s The Force Awakens.
