‘Star Wars’ director Rian Johnson reveals the one thing he hopes will “surprise” fans in ‘The Last Jedi’

The next instalment of the sci-fi saga will hit cinemas next month

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has revealed the “one thing” that he hopes cinemagoers will be surprised about with the new film.

The Last Jedi will hit cinemas on December 14, with the film a direct sequel to 2015’s The Force Awakens.

Speaking ahead of the imminent release of The Last Jedi – which is now just over two weeks away – Johnson has voiced his hope about the “one thing” he wants Star Wars fans to take away from the new movie.

“That’s one thing I hope people will be surprised about with the movie,” Johnson told Rolling Stone when asked if the new film would take on a darker tone. “I think it’s very funny. The trailers have been kind of dark – the movie has that, but I also made a real conscious effort for it to be a riot.

“I want it to have all the things tonally that I associate with Star Wars, which is not just the Wagner of it. It’s also the Flash Gordon.”

Earlier this week, Star Wars star Daisy Ridley revealed that she was surprised by the plot of The Last Jedi.

Ridley, who plays Rey, said that her surprise derived from how “there’s a few storylines that [are] sort of coming together and connecting.”
