‘Star Wars’: ‘Whiplash’ actor Miles Teller reportedly on shortlist to play Han Solo in spin-off film

Dave Franco and Ansel Elgort are also said to be in contention to take over from Harrison Ford

Whiplash star Miles Teller and Bad Neighbours actor Dave Franco are reportedly on the shortlist to play Han Solo in the character’s upcoming Star Wars spin-off film.

In December it was reported that Disney and Lucasfilm had auditioned more than 2,500 actors to take over from Harrison Ford, and they are now believed to have whittled down their wish list to “around a dozen” names.

Ansel Elgort (The Fault In Our Stars), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age Of Extinction), Logan Lerman The Perks Of Being A Wallflower) and Scott Eastwood (Flags Of Our Fathers) are also on the shortlist, according to Variety.

Announced in July, the 2018 spin-off will tell the story of “how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley”.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the directing duo behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, have signed on to direct the film, whose screenplay is being written by Star Wars franchise veteran Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan.

Disney and Lucasfilm has given the currently untitled Han Solo spin-off film a release date of May 25, 2018. It will be the second in the so-called “Anthology Series” of Star Wars spin-off films following Rogue One, which is being directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards for a December 16, 2016 release. The Theory Of Everything‘s Felicity Jones is playing that film’s lead.

Harrison Ford, who returns as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, recently insisted he wants “nothing to do with” the character’s upcoming spin-off film.
