Steven Spielberg’s ‘Bridge Of Spies’ and ‘Carol’ lead the 2016 British Academy Film Awards nominations

Eddie Redmayne is also up for Leading Actor for the second year running

Steven Spielberg’s Bridge Of Spies and Carol, starring Cate Blanchett lead this year’s British Academy Film Awards with nine nods each.

Leonardo Di Caprio’s latest movie The Revenant which is out in the UK later this month, is also in the hunt with eight nominations including Best Film and Director.

Key British films such as Brooklyn trail with six nods, while The Danish Girl and Ex-Machina both have five, as does Adam McKay’s dark horse financial comedy, The Big Short.

Eddie Redmayne has been voted for Leading Actor for the second year in a row for The Danish Girl. He was previously nominated and later won the same award for The Theory Of Everything in 2015. Redmayne faces competition from Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Fassbender.

Dame Maggie Smith is up for best actress for The Lady In The Van – pitting her against Cate Blanchett.

Elsewhere, George Miller’s triumphant return with outback drama Mad Max: Fury Road has landed him seven nominations.

The new Star Wars film The Force Awakens also took four, for music, production design, sound and visual effects.

The awards, were voted for by some 6,000 Bafta members.
